Research project: Reid: Sb- and Bi-Containing Polydentates & Macrocycles

The synthesis and chemistry of macrocyclic ligands is a major area of modern inorganic and coordination chemistry, and most elements of Groups 15 and 16 have been incorporated into macrocycles. Antimony (and bismuth) are the only elements in these two groups for which this is yet to be achieved.

We are developing the synthesis of these new compounds, including chiral distibines utilising modifications of synthetic procedures which we have developed in our labs. New high yield routes occur via reaction of di-Grignard reagents or dilithio reagents such as o-C6H4(CH2MgBr)2with R2SbCl. Current work is exploring the organometallic chemistry of these species towards alkyl Pt(II) and (IV) centres, Rh(I) and Ir(I) and reactions thereof.

We are now developing this chemistry towards the even more elusive dibismuthine ligands.
