CENV6168 Transport Management and Safety

Module Overview

A key component of Transportation Planning and Engineering is enabling safer and more efficient use of transport infrastructure through transport management. This often involves making use of new technologies, in particular those related to Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), but may also be achieved through innovative applications of more established techniques. This module covers this topic through a series of practical examples, predominantly in the roads sector, highlighting the extent to which various management systems can influence transport efficiency, safety and environmental impact.

Aims and Objectives

Module Aims

This module aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the key factors which contribute to the safe and efficient management and operation of transport systems. This module is designed for students on the MSc in Transportation Planning and Engineering. However, it will also be open to all students at Masters level and above within the University, including those studying for an iPHD or EngD in the Doctoral Training Centres.

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • The use of systems thinking for project management.
  • How Intelligent Transport Systems can be used for managing traffic.
  • How urban public transport can be managed.
  • The management of road space and vehicle speeds for all road users.
  • Traffic management evaluation methods.
  • Traffic management, control and information systems in urban and inter-urban networks including Integrated Urban Traffic Management systems and Smart Motorways.
  • Transport management methods and road safety in developing countries.
  • The procedure for road safety audits.
  • The principles and practice of air traffic management.
Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the key features of traffic management systems and appraise their potential for specific situations.
  • Analyse, design and evaluate traffic management schemes.
  • Critically evaluate the potential of different ITS technologies to improve the safety and efficiency of road transport systems.

Syllabus

The syllabus is designed to provide students with a detailed understanding of transport and traffic management and safety. Contact time in the module will include the following sessions, with each session including a mix of different delivery modes as decided by individual lecturers in consultation with the module lead: 1) Introduction and Need for Traffic Management 2) System Thinking for Project Management 3) Road Traffic Management: Inter-Urban Highways 4) Road Traffic Management: Urban Networks 5) Automatic Road Traffic Monitoring 6) Traveller Information Systems – Intelligent Mobility 7) ITS and In-vehicle Management Systems for Driver Support, Control, Safety and Information 8) Connected and Autonomous Vehicles 9) Planning and Management for Bus Operations 10) Introduction to Air Traffic Management 11) Field Trip to NATS 12) Parking Management 13) Introduction to Road Safety 14) Resilience Engineering in Transport Systems 15) Speed Management and Traffic Calming 16) Road Safety Audits 17) Traffic Management and Road Safety in Developing Countries

Special Features

This module will include a field trip to NATS (National Air Traffic Services) at Swanwick. This will not involve any additional costs to students.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

A mixture of classroom-based teaching and learning methods will be used, including lectures, seminars, group activities and class discussions. These will be supplemented by short introductory videos available through Blackboard, self-study, and a field trip to NATS.
