Module overview

You will undertake a substantive piece of independent academic work, performing economic research on your chosen research topic. You will motivate your research topic, survey and review the relevant academic literature and identify gaps in our knowledge by proposing a research question, identify and apply appropriate methods, present and interprete your results and your conclusions.

This is designed to demonstrate your ability to manage your own learning, to draw together information from a variety of sources, to demonstrate your ability to understand and convey the current state of academic research on an economic topic and to make use of a range of concepts and techniques that are state of the art in economic research.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

Apply state of the art economic methods and sophisticated economic reasoning to applied topics or questions.
Apply adequate quantitative methods to address economic questions and problems.
Formulate a research questions in economics and translate it into an appropriate research design.
Retrieve and analyse economic data for statistical inference on the quantitative or qualitative workings of economic mechanisms and policies.

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

Theoretical and empirical developments at the research frontier in your chosen area of study.
Ethical issues associated with the conduct of research in economics
State of the art economic theory and methods.
the process of model formulation, analysis and empirical testing in economic research;

Transferable and Generic Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

Identify, select and access a range of sources for the presentation of arguments and evidence.
Work independently to a deadline, demonstrating initiative through identifying possible sources, and self-management by structuring the workload over several months.
Communicate logical arguments and quantitative reasoning in form of a research report.
