Introduction to Business

Module overview

This module is designed to give International Foundation Year (IFY) students preparing for undergraduate programmes in the Southampton Business School (SBS), a broad understanding of a range of fundamental business concepts. It will enhance your business specific vocabulary and your ability to communicate in English about business and related topics. It will also give you experience of working in groups with other students.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

demonstrate an awareness of some of the basic economic and environmental issues associated with business activity
understand and analyse the nature and role of 21st century business

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

the specialised English language used in the business environment
some of the specific communication skills required
some of the key theories and analytical tools used in business and management
a variety of topics relating to business and management

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

The module will be delivered in two classes a week. These will be used for lectures, tutor led workshops and tutorials.

Guidance on the preparation of group presentations and writing the assessed report will be provided by the teaching team.

The module is assessed through coursework. All the assessment tasks are ‘summative’ Feedback will be given in the form of peer evaluation, self-reflection and tutor’s comments before you submit your task in order to help you to produce your best work.
