IFYP0023 Introduction to Business

Module Overview

This module is designed to give International Foundation Year (IFY) students preparing for undergraduate programmes in the Southampton Business School (SBS), a broad understanding of a range of fundamental business concepts. It will enhance your business specific vocabulary and your ability to communicate in English about business and related topics. It will also give you experience of working in groups with other students.

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • a variety of topics relating to business and management
  • some of the specific communication skills required
  • some of the key theories and analytical tools used in business and management
  • the specialised English language used in the business environment
Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • understand and analyse the nature and role of 21st century business
  • demonstrate an awareness of some of the basic economic and environmental issues associated with business activity
Transferable and Generic Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • demonstrate effective written and speaking skills for business topics
  • work effectively as part of a team
  • continue to develop your research and communication skills


This module will introduce you a range of key business related concepts. It will also provide you with opportunities to use these concepts in individual and group work. The concepts and topics the syllabus covers include an introduction to business and organisational structures, teamwork, business strategy, corporate social responsibility, marketing and finance.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

The module will be delivered in two classes a week. These will be used for lectures, tutor led workshops and tutorials. Guidance on the preparation of group presentations and writing the assessed report will be provided by the teaching team.

Assessment Strategy

The module is assessed through coursework. All the assessment tasks are ‘summative’ Feedback will be given in the form of peer evaluation, self-reflection and tutor’s comments before you submit your task in order to help you to produce your best work.
