The Social Sciences Experimental Laboratory

Welcome to the Social Sciences Experimental Laboratory.

The Social Sciences Experimental Laboratory (SSEL) provides the facilities and infrastructure for researchers at the University of Southampton to conduct cutting-edge experiments on decision-making. The laboratory was established in 2014, and it is based in the Murray Building at the School of Social Sciences of the University of Southampton.

Most experiments conducted at the SSEL are in the fields of behavioural and experimental economics. Experiments are run either in person at the Murray Building or online. Recent experiments conducted in the physical lab have examined a variety of research topics, such as voting in the presence of biased information, the capacity of individuals to distinguish between an expert and a layperson, and how people choose among uncertain prospects.

Since its creation in 2014, the SSEL is also a place for teaching and outreach activities where students can “experience economics”, such as in the module Economics with Experiments.

Are you a student? Would you like to participate in an experiment and earn some money?

Any student at the University of Southampton can participate in the experiments conducted at the SSEL. The experiments are completely anonymous, and no special skills or prior knowledge is required. For your participation, you will earn a show-up fee (around £5 per hour) and you can earn more money based on your decisions during the experiment.

Registering takes less than 5 minutes! It does not commit you to participate in any particular experiment; you will receive email notifications about upcoming experiments to which you can enrol.
