SES-71-154 PhD Studentship: Investigation of fine-scale turbulence

Turbulent flows are made of a range of spatial and temporal scales. A complete understanding of the physics over the entire range of scales is lacking. Researchers attempt to breakdown the range of scales in to smaller partitions such as energy producing range, inertial range and dissipative range. However, the bounds of these ranges and the mutual interaction between these individual ranges remain unresolved. In this collaborative project between the University of Southampton and Cambridge University, we aim to develop novel experimental and computational methods and apply it to different turbulent flows in order to understand the structure of small-scale turbulence.

A total of 3 PhD studentships at the University of Southampton are available. Two positions are in the area of experimental fluid mechanics where the goal is to design, develop and apply state-of-the-art experimental methods including Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (TPIV) in wind/water tunnels to understand the physics of small-scales in turbulent flows. The remaining studentship is in the area of computational fluid dynamics with the aim at performing large-scale direct numerical simulations of various canonical flows complementary to the experimental work. The numerical simulations will be performed on UK national facilities with cutting-edge high-performance solvers.
