SES-78-170 PhD Studentship: Multi-scale modelling for reducing pollutant formation in turbulent combustion

This PhD project offers a student with a background in the physical sciences, and interests in fluid-dynamics and computational modelling, an exciting opportunity to work with a major aero-engine company and to contribute to the future of aero-engine technology.

This research project aims to provide improved prediction methods for the development of advanced combustion systems with reduced fuel consumption and pollutant emission. Predictive tools are required in order to provide detailed information about how design features effect pollutant formation, and thereby reduce the development time and costs of new combustion systems.

A principle challenge in simulation of combustion engines is the wide range of scales involved: a jet engine combustor may be one metre across, but the chemical reaction and diffusion processes which control pollutant formation occur within flow structures that span only a few microns. This research takes advantage of the excellent environment for computational modelling at Southampton University, to develop an innovative multi-scale simulation strategy, with great potential to improve predictions of engine pollution.
