SES-80-176 PhD Studentship: Tailored nanostructured films for wear protection at high temperature

The core objective of the project is the development of a self-adaptive hard coating which can simultaneously protect cutting tools and machine components against wear at high temperatures whilst lowering the frictional energy losses.

The project is based on the original idea of a controlled release of the self-lubricating element from a tailored nanostructured coating at high temperature. The architecture of the coating will be carefully designed to create a nanotechnology device where the constitutive layers will have specific scopes. The applicant will deal with problems related to thermal stability, oxidation, and tribology at high temperatures.

There is NO additional funding to cover full overseas fees costs.  It will not be possible to consider your application unless you can provide the additional funding from other sources to pay the fees difference (£12,388 for 2011/12).
