Ms Laura Duncan is a Senior Teaching Fellow in English for Academic Purposes in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton.

I've worked at Southampton University since 2005 and graduated with an MA in Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching in 2006.  Since starting at Southampton, I've taught on a wide range of courses: in-sessional and pre-sessional, credit-bearing and support.  I’ve also worked with students ranging from foundation to doctorate level.  I've developed particular interests in teaching listening and discipline-specific language provision.  I've provided subject-specific language support to engineering, health sciences, and management students.

Research interests

I have been involved in two projects to develop materials to help students prepare for Southampton.

Prepare for Success

I helped developed the first phrase of materials for Prepare for Success, which was funded by UKCISA.  Prepare for Success is an interactive online tool to help student get ready to study in the UK.

Transition Project

I led a Transition Project to help MSc students in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment understand their assessed tasks.  Videos of engineering tutors, samples of work and explanations can be found on the English for Engineers website.

I coordinate English language provision in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment.

This includes:

ENGL 9090 English for Engineers Stage 4a. This is a credit-bearing course for engineering students with IELTS 6.5+ or equivalent.

GENG 0016 English for Engineers and Scientists. This is a credit-bearing course for students on the Engineering Foundation Year who have not already met the university's language entrance requirements.

In-sessional language support for students in:

  • Aeronautics, Astronautics and Computation Engineering Unit
  • Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering and Science Unit
  • Engineering Sciences Unit
  • Institute of Sound and Vibration Research
