PhD Studentship - In situ and Remote Intelligent Sensing

Location: Highfield Campus

Supervisor: Dependent on project selection.

Funding: Full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students and enhanced stipend of £15009 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.

Understanding the Earth's environmental frontiers - from planetary interiors to space - is essential for tackling global challenges and hazards, but they are inaccessible using conventional means. Although these environmental frontiers are remote or otherwise hard to access, they contain the majority of resources, and the natural hazards that take place in them (e.g. space weather, earthquakes,tsunami and flooding) can result in significant humanitarian casualties and economic disruption (in the order of billions of dollars a day) through damage to our infrastructure.

The In-situ and Remote Intelligent Sensing (IRIS) FEPS Centre of Excellence will fund a single PhD that will further our goal to persistent awareness of these environments, to capture more relevant information and facilitate timely, well informed decisions that will improve the sustainability and resilience of our infrastructure and the safety of citizens. IRIS has been established with the ultimate aim of developing intelligent, connected and multi-sensor capabilities that enable persistent awareness of the regions, insight that bridges the knowledge gap, and informed response.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent)
