Dr Margo Ononaiye, Senior Lecturer and Clinical Director of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Programme at the University of Southampton.

Following my DPhil, I trained as a clinical psychologist at the University of Sheffield. Once qualified, I worked primarily in the NHS in adult mental health settings as a clinical psychologist. I have always had a passion in helping others to learn and started working at Salomons on the IAPT and CBT programmes as a Senior Lecturer. In 2010, I moved to the University of East Anglia and became the Deputy Programme Director (Clinical) on the Doctorate Clinical Psychology Programme. In June 2016, I moved to the University of Southampton and work full-time mainly on the Doctorate Programme in Clinical Psychology Programme.

Clinically, I work primarily using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches and I am an accredited CBT practitioner with the BABCP. I also use techniques from the Cognitive Analytical Perspective (CAT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), which means I am able to draw upon ideas from each of these models to inform my clinical practice.

Research interests

My research interests include cognitive processing in anxiety and depression with a specific focus on using cognitive techniques to retrain unhelpful biases. My other research interests are leadership skills within the clinical psychology profession and the impact this has on training.

Research group

Centre for Innovation in Mental Health (CiMH)

My key responsibilities are on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Programme as the Clinical Director including line managing the trainees and overseeing the developing of their clinical skills during training.  Another key role is the sourcing, organisation and quality assurance of clinical practice placements across the Region and arranging supervisor training events.
