Project overview
Descriptor:
Communities Against Cancer intervention aim and design
Communities Against Cancer (CAC) adopted a community development approach, supporting seldom-heard communities to identify their own ways to promote healthy lifestyles and cancer prevention, raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer, encourage early detection, and encourage attendance at cancer screening. CAC provided capacity-building support (including training and resources) and funding in the form of a grant (up to £5,000) to individuals and groups in the Wessex area.
Evaluation design:
Process and outcome evaluation involving multiple methods:
• documentary analyses of all Communities Against Cancer related material
• quantitative analyses of all applications
• participant observation of Communities Against Cancer related events and activities
• qualitative interviews with CAC2 staff, advocates and recipients of funding.
Key Findings
Findings demonstrated that raising cancer awareness, (including signs and symptoms, healthy lifestyles, prevention, and help-seeking behaviour), among seldom heard communities through a community-based grant scheme has been successful in meeting desired outcomes. The scheme has delivered a tailored, adaptive approach to community engagement.
