What is the average cost to rent privately?

Southampton is the 4th cheapest student city in the UK
A good value city to live in

Prices vary depending on the size, location and state of a property, but an average student house in Southampton costs about £340 a month, and in Winchester it is about £365 a month.

Rent does not usually include your bills, which will have to be paid separately. Utility bills (gas, water and electricity) can be about £15 a week depending on how much you use. You will also have to pay for internet which on average may work out to be £3.46 a week, TV, a TV license and telephone line rental if you want to have these services in your house. These costs would be shared between all residents of the property.

How do you look for a student house to rent?

Support and advice

The best place to look is on the Southampton Accreditation Scheme for Student Housing website (SASSH).

SASSH is a self-accreditation scheme run in partnership by the University of Southampton, Southampton Solent University and Southampton City Council to ensure that you have access to high quality, well managed accommodation. Any house on the SASSH list must provide a valid electrical installation condition report, a gas safety certificate and an energy performance certificate, and is subject to random spot checks from the Council.

You can also talk to individual letting agents, or use rightmove students.

But before looking for a student house it is a good idea to make sure that you know your rights as a tenant. The Students' Union also provides extensive advice through The Advice Centre.
