Research interests

Many neurodegenerative disorders are characterised by extensive neuronal loss and the formation of pathological protein inclusions. I am particularly interested in tau, a microtubule-associated protein, that has been shown to intracellularly aggregate into neurofibrillary tangles in the neocortex of patients diagnosed with tauopathies. The deposition and propagation of tau pathology, which correlates to clinical severity of the disease, has been attributed to the pathological release of toxic tau species in intact cells, however, the exact mechanism of transmission is still unknown.

To address this, I’m currently working on developing novel microfluidic and bioluminescent assays to elucidate the exact molecular and cellular mechanism of tau propagation in neurodegenerative diseases across minimalistic neuronal networks.
