Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Explain the effect of hearing impairment on child development, and relate child development to expected milestones for education and language
• Identify important issues to identifying when taking paediatric case histories and relate those factors to the subsequent assessment and management of the child
• Explain common approaches to the habilitation of children with hearing loss, including hearing-aid prescription and evaluation and other common and emerging forms of management
• Explain the most common methods of hearing assessment used with children, including their underlying principles and the interpretation of their results

• The importance of timely hearing assessment and its link to speech and language development
• Milestones of normal child development particularly of speech and language
• Epidemiology of, and screening for, hearing impairment in childhood
• Strategies for assessment
• Practicals on hearing assessment (1) of babies and toddlers; (2) pre-school children
• Constructing and interpreting patient history
• Selecting appropriate tests for different ages
• An introduction to Sections C1 and C2 the IRCP
• Indications for medical/surgical management or onward referral, for example due to glue ear
• Basic habilitation approaches applied to children
• Assessment for cochlear implant candidacy
