This module develops the basic concepts of protein structure and function within the overall context of their roles within the cell. Major themes in the course are intracellular cell signalling and extracellular communication, protein and vesicle targeting and bioenergetics.
Aims and Objectives
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Explain the mechanisms that target proteins to particular locations or ensure they are secreted from the cell.
- Explain the structure, function and assembly of different classes of transmembrane proteins
- Discuss how cells connect to each other and their surrounding environment and the influence this has on cell-cell communication
- Explain how energy is generated and utilised for correct cell function, and how impairment of bioenergetic pathways leads to disease
- Describe some of the signals in proteins and mRNAs that determine their localisation to different parts of a cell.
- Describe, using named examples, how a ligand binding to its receptor activates intracellular signalling cascades.
On completion of the module, using the information gathered from lectures, practical sessions and extended reading, you should have a sound knowledge and understanding of the following broad topics: protein targeting and export, membranes, proteins and signal transduction, protein modifications and membrane interactions in protein regulation within the cell.
