Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Present findings to a panel
• Produce a dissertation on an agreed researchd project, which contains an introduction on the background scientific literature
• Collect record and interpret data derived from research
• Design and perform fieldwork in a chosen area of research
• Design and test scientific hypotheses

Each student undertakes an independent investigation using a collection at a museum, or similar, that includes both a literature survey and practical components. The theory component will consist of a critical review of the literature relating to the proposed experimental component of the project. The research work is related to the appropriate degree programme. Each student is assigned to an appropriate supervisor in Biological Sciences. Assistance in approaching external partners will be provided, but student will need to identify an institution with whom they wish to carry out their research during their second year of study. The Biological Sciences supervisor will advise on and direct the project in collaboration with the partner institution supervisor. Both of the supervisors will assist in the preparation of a written report.
