Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Articulate your own approaches about special educational needs, social justice and inclusion.
• Use your knowledge and understanding critically to develop your position personally about policies, practices and processes related to special needs provision.
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the values and principles behind special needs provision and processes and their historical evolution.
• Analyse the concepts, theories and issues of policy related to special educational needs in a systematic way.

• Processes of inclusion and exclusion for students with SEND
• The models of disability
• Voices and perspectives of students, teachers and others
• International perspectives on special and inclusive education
• Universal design for learning and person centred planning
• Diversity, attitudes and human rights
• Learning support assistants
• Becoming more familiar with specific SENDs through personal research
• Sharing of knowledge of a particular SEND

Teaching and learning methods

Typically, the module is taught in a mixture of lecture and seminars sessions.

Teaching comprises seminars, lectures, student presentations, group and class discussions, posing and responding to questions and further reading/research around a variety of topics.

You will also be given additional resources (such as links to videos and texts) on a weekly basis to support the individual lectures and seminars. All texts are either provided for you on Blackboard, or are readily available in the library.
