This module is designed to provide students from a range of multidisciplinary backgrounds, such as Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Prosthetists, podiatrists and Engineers with the opportunity to explore contemporary issues related to limb loss in a thriving environment bringing together expertise in research, clinical practice and enterprise. This will involve exploring key issues relating to a wide range of current issues facing the delivery of amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation in a wide range of different settings, such as the adult and children services within the NHS, other healthcare organisations within in and outside of the UK, the prosthetics industry, charity settings, Paralympic sport and the military. The module forms part of the MSc Amputation and Prosthetic Rehabilitation pathway within the MSc Health Sciences Programme and is closely linked to a second module amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation specific module called ‘Amputation and Rehabilitation and Prosthetic Use’ (20 ECTS), but can be carried out as a standalone module.
This module is likely to attract professionals who are currently working in the field amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation or prosthetic use, or those who would like to move into a career in this area. The module will therefore undertake a flexible route for working professionals and will be taught in one weekly block involving weekend work. The module is currently endorsed by the British Association of Chartered Physiotherapist in Amputee Rehabilitation (BACPAR).
Aims and Objectives
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Contrast and critically evaluate a wide range of current literature underpinning the evidence base in contemporary issues in the area of limb loss and key issues that impact on the delivery of amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation in a wide range of different settings
- Demonstrate the ability to debate, critique, evaluate and refine your knowledge skills needed to understand current issues and practices within the delivery of amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation
- Compare, appraise and consider the role of the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation within different setting and environment
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the rehabilitation journey following an amputation through the consideration of key factors from a physical and psychosocial perspective
- Develop knowledge and skills of key contemporary issues in limb loss that will develop your own professional role within the delivery of post amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation
The module will be taught over one four day teaching block from (i.e. Thursday to Sunday) and contain a total of 8 three hours sessions (24 hours) that will involve lectures, tutorial, seminar, practical and demonstration styles of teaching. Topic examples include:
- Module Introduction and ‘the changing world of amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation’
- Global Challenges and worldwide issues
- Current debates in diabetes management and advances in skin health (Diabetes as the silent killer across the world)
- Advances in engineering and prosthetic development
- Limb loss and prosthetic use in the military and with areas of conflict
- Paralympics and sports for people with limb loss
- Providing support and managing people with multiple limb loss
- Contemporary issues regarding policy and guidelines

Teaching and learning methods
The module embraces a reflective and deep learning approach where you will be encouraged to engage in a wide range of activities that encourage meaningful discussion, debate and application to the contemporary issues in limb loss. The module is constructed in a way that enables you to learn from your peers and gain a wide variety of rich multidisciplinary perspectives and views. This peer directed learning approach will work well in this module due to the multidisciplinary nature of the field and the possible mix of UK and International students and therefore providing opportunities to learn and connect with different cultures and clinical/professional settings.
There is a variety of different teaching and learning methods utilised within this module. However, most of the sessions will involve a key lecture that is followed by class discussion and group work.

Written assignment (3,000 words): You will be required to select a key issue discussed within the module. You will be asked to 1) clarify your understanding of the issue, 2) describe and critique the literature and/or theories related to the issue, 3) discuss the implications of the issue in terms of current clinical practice and 4) evaluate strategies or developments that may enhance practice or the patient experience relating to the issue.
