HLTH6238 Research Project for MSc and MN

Module Overview

In this module you will carry out an independent project, following the development of a Project Proposal in your earlier Research Methods or Critical Inquiry module. Further to carrying out your study, you will also gain insight into dissemination of your findings within a research or practice context.

To gain and demonstrate the skills necessary to undertake an independent research project, systematic literature review or service improvement project.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Rationalise the selection of the specific problem or issue by systematic searching and critical appraisal of the relevant literature.
  • Demonstrate adherence to relevant ethical and governance requirements.
  • Use appropriate methodologies to collect data appropriate to the aims of the project.
  • Analyse, interpret, and synthesise data critically and appropriately to address the aims of the project.
  • Justify the conclusions and implications for your profession with well-reasoned arguments.
  • Demonstrate the ability to disseminate your work.

Syllabus

The module is practically-focused, so no formal teaching arrangements are in place. However, a menu of workshops will be available to prepare students for the range of skills they may require e.g. completing ethics and governance documents, using specialist statistical or qualitative software, searching bibliographic databases, writing a paper for publication, Writing a report, Dissemination strategies, underlying philosophy and approaches to sampling , data collection, data analysis and interpretation,, Models for Service Improvement, Project management, You will achieve the learning outcomes of this module through one of three routes. 1. Evidence based project based on the principles of systematic review 2. An empirical research project (subject to relevant approvals and feasibility) 3. A service improvement project (subject to relevant approvals and feasibility) Students will be able undertake empirical research or audit projects ONLY when the project is demonstrated to be feasible after completion of the Formative assessment at the end of Part 1/3.

Special Features

Students on the Postgraduate MSc programme will undertake two weeks (80 hours) placement within a clinical or clinical academic environment as a part of their independent effort in this module. This time is to support you in developing your proposal through gaining insights into how research is translated into nursing practice.

This module involves an independent project. Learning in relation to subject matter and research methods (practical and theoretical) will be project-specific. You will have a designated supervisor or supervisory team, who will have suitable academic and professional expertise.

Assessment

Assessment Strategy

You will complete an independent research project, and this will be assessed through the submission of a project file and a written paper of up to 5000 words. Dual Field Nursing students on the Integrated Masters of Nursing Programme must achieve a of 40% in order to pass the module. Postgraduate MSc students must achieve a mark of 50% in order to pass the module
