LANG3011 Seeing and being seen: Study Abroad re-entry

Module Overview

This module is designed to accompany you as you resume your programme of studies in Southampton and grapple with the challenges of re-entry. We will support you as you reflect upon your experience of study abroad, enable you to articulate those experiences and work with you to incorporate them into your career planning in ways which will set you apart. Particular attention will be paid to what you have learnt about yourself, the ways in which you talk about your study abroad and how those experiences are qualitatively different from regular travel or gap year activities. You will be able to work on producing an enhanced CV and manage your online presence in order to reflect your identity and experiences in positive ways.

Aims and Objectives

Module Aims

This module is the follow up module for Modern Languages students who took LANG2010/LANG2011 and for Humanities exchange students who took HUMA2012as part of the preparation for their study abroad. The module is non- assessed and non- credit bearing . The aims of this module are to- -Enable you to fully recognise the study abroad experience and make the adjustment to being back in Southampton -Deepen your understanding of the ways in which study abroad has enriched you and your studies -Advance your ability to communicate that enrichment to employers -enable you to reflect upon the ways in which your online presence reflects the ways in which you see and how you would like others to see you.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • reflect constructively on the challenges of living abroad- alert you to processes of re-engaging in Southampton
  • enable you to fully integrate the study abroad experience into your programme of studies at Southampton
Transferable and Generic Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • assess your study abroad experiences
  • Formulate an enhanced CV
Subject Specific Practical Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Write and speak with some authority on the value of study abroad
  • Articulate your intercultural competence to academics and employers

How to articulate your cultural intelligence How to reflect upon and articulate your study abroad experience both orally and in written form How to reflect upon the ways in which you recorded your experience ( your photographs) to examine what you saw and how you saw it How to produce an enhanced CV incorporating your year abroad How to manage your online presence incorporating your year abroad How to engage with the international community in Southampton, Southampton University and beyond
