MATH6001 Project

Module Overview

Students are allocated a project with an external organisation or on a topic devised by a member of staff in the Operational Research or Management Sciences group at the University of Southampton.

Obtain practical experience of applying problem-solving skills by working on an extended Operational Research project.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Be able to structure and write a dissertation for an academic audience, and an Executive Summary and/or presentation for a business audience
  • Develop Operational Research skills for problem-solving.
  • Develop key transferable skills, including personal organisation, finding and using information, and written and oral communication.


Students will work on a topic within Operational Research, either with an external organisation or on a project with a member of academic staff.

Special Features

The module may involve working with an external organisation either on their premises or at the University of Southampton. Ethical approval may be required for some projects. You will be expected to pay for the cost of printing and binding the project.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching takes the form of individual supervision meetings, occurring approximately once per week. Students may be expected to work on their project in collaboration with an industrial sponsor in addition to their university supervisor.

Students are responsible for meeting the cost of essential textbooks, and of producing such essays, assignments, laboratory reports and dissertations as are required to fulfil the academic requirements for each programme of study.

Students are responsible for printing and binding costs for their dissertation.

Travel Costs for placements

Students working with external projects will be awarded a bursary to cover reasonable additional expenses.
