Module overview
The Research as Applied to Medicine 2 (RAM2) module will build on the knowledge and skills acquired in the Research as Applied to Medicine 1 (RAM1) module. You will further develop your critical appraisal skills, learn how to design a relevant research study and communicate research to a variety of audiences.
Aims and Objectives
Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Keep up to date with relevant medical evidence, as the foundations for lifelong learning
- Work effectively as part of a team and to develop both your own leadership skills and the ability to accept leadership by others
- Identify, understand and discuss research evidence relevant to the understanding and treatment of disease
- Understand the nature of research practice by engaging in research-focussed seminars and research taster session
- Formulate simple relevant research/audit/evaluation questions in biomedical science, psychosocial science or population science, and design appropriate studies or experiments to address the questions
- Understand types of research data, hypothesis testing and the range of statistical tests used in medical research
- Develop and demonstrate oral and written presentation skills, to communicate research evidence to a range of audiences
- Explain the different types of research evidence and understand how research is carried out, with reference to research governance, ethics and patient/public involvement
- Understand how to gather data, undertake simple data analysis and interpret common statistical test results as applied in quantitative health research
- Identify the relevance of research learning for a career pathway in academic medicine
- Confidently read, understand and critically appraise a range of research papers
- Apply appropriate literature searching and referencing techniques
- Understand what is meant by evidence based medicine and its importance as part of maintaining continuous professional development throughout your career

Assessment
Assessment strategy
Assessment of the module has two components that are submitted as part of the 'Design and research study' tutorial series: • A Written Assignment (Critical appraisal) • A Lay Summary There is no compensation between the Written Assignment and the Lay Summary components. Both components must be passed to pass the module - failure in any one component leads to a repeat opportunity in that component only; failure in both components leads to a repeat opportunity in both components. RAM2 content is also examined in the Year 2 Synoptic assessment. Students will keep a portfolio of research activities for the duration of their BM programme.Formative
