Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Operate basic laboratory equipment and follow standard operating procedures and experimental protocols
• Describe and explain the principles underpinning common methodologies and techniques used in cancer research.
• Present and communicate research data through appropriate scientific report writing
• Recognise and demonstrate the practical application of good lab practice and risk assessment
• Interpret and critically analyse experimental data
• Prepare detailed and structured records in laboratory books

The module will cover the major topics starting with the theoretical components of working in a laboratory, the concepts underpinning the techniques studies in the module and a significant practical component allowing students to develop their practical skills in techniques such as molecular biology, sequencing, flow cytometry and protein biology.

Teaching and learning methods

The module will be comprised of a variety of teaching and learning methods to promote a range of skills and meet the different learning styles of the course participants.

Teaching will include theoretical sessions to include seminars, lectures and interactive workshops to provide a solid basis for understanding the theory of practical lab working and will be taught by a range of academic professionals. Practical sessions on themed areas will be a significant focus of this module, working with expert researchers and technicians within each topic to undertake and learn the practical skills involved within each methodology. These sessions will be run within the research labs at SGH.

Online virtual learning environments will support independent learning through use of Blackboard and Q&A forums to promote and enhance student learning.
