Module overview

This module introduces the scope of midwifery practice and foundations of universal midwifery care in order for you to contribute to the provision of safe, competent and evidence-based care throughout the intrapartum and postnatal period. You will consider the biological, psychological and sociological processes of labour and the puerperium, and how these impact upon the woman, fetus, neonate and her family. You will combine your knowledge about the physiological process of labour, the puerperium and neonatal adaptation to extra-uterine life, with the recommended care provision, to learn essential clinical skills in preparation for your first clinical placement.
