Communicating with Children, Young People and their Families/Carers : In this theme, students will consider ways to communicate effectively with children, young people and their families. They will use their knowledge of child development to consider age and developmentally appropriate ways to communicate, including using a variety of communication techniques.
Structure history taking: In this theme, students will gain an in-depth overview of the communication and assessment skills frameworks that underpin comprehensive health history taking. They will also gain an understanding of taking a holistic approach considering children and young people’s bio-psychosocial needs, health and wellbeing, as well as consideration of health behaviors. Students will also be introduced to documentation relevant to history taking.
Physical Health Assessment: In this theme, students will gain the underpinning theoretical and practical knowledge of undertaking a structured physical assessment of children and young people. This will include gaining knowledge of the components of a structured physical health examination through basic knowledge of child development, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, and identifying normal and abnormal findings. They will recognise the differences that might occur across the age ranges of infants, children and young people, as well as taking into consideration different genders and ethnicities. Students will be introduced to vital signs, as part of a comprehensive assessment, alongside standardized early warning systems such as modified early warning systems, fluid balance charts, and other relevant clinical documentation.
Working In Partnership with Children, Young people and their Families/Carers: In this theme, students will be introduced to how nurses assess, plan and deliver care to meet fundamental care needs of children, young people and their families/carers. For example students will consider dignity, safety, comfort and pain management, infection prevention and control, skin integrity, nutrition, hydration, elimination, mobility, hygiene, and oral care .
