Module overview
The Podiatry business module provides students with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in setting up and/or working in private practice. The module will help to develop an understanding of the environmental, financial and marketing considerations required.
It will include both profession-specific learning and learning generic business management skills. The teaching and learning methods may include lectures, seminars, tutorials, profession-specific group work and self-directed study. Learning will be augmented by electronic learning resources, core texts and directed-study activities.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Select and justify the financial considerations of running a business including Tax, NI, VAT, pensions, cost-based and market based pricing.
- Analyse and justify the types of insurance available and those that are required by law.
Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Develop and evaluate the responsibilities under health and safety legislation & standards for clinical practice.
- Develop and justify the marketing of your practice & advertising your services.
- Determine and apply the main responsibilities and obligations associated with employing staff or engaging an associate.
Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Create a practice governance plan
- Analyse and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of working in private practice or setting up in private practice.
Syllabus

Learning and Teaching
Teaching and learning methods
Keynote lectures will ensure coverage of specific topics and will be supported by clearly identified indicative reading. This module and will be further supported by seminars, debates, group work, problem based learning, audio-visual resources and case presentations.
