PSIO2035 Practice Placement 3 Physio

Module Overview

This module provides an opportunity to experience current practice in a variety of locations across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Principle providers of placement will be in community, secondary or primary care settings. You will be attached to an experienced therapist who will act as placement educator for the entire period of study. You and the placement educator will be allocated a Locality Contact (a member of the academic staff in the School's Physio team) who will provide a link to the academic programme and will visit you at least once during the placement. You are supernumerary to the staff on the unit in which you are placed. This particular placement has a focus on you making an active contribution to the assessment and treatment of service users in a specific area of practice. You will take an active part under close supervision of the placement educator who will guide and prompt you to take responsibility for a selected case load. The experience of working closely with patients of all ages, cultural backgrounds and across clinical specialities is an essential ingredient to the learning and assessment of competency in physiotherapy programmes. This placement links to work carried out in other level 5 modules where the assessment and treatment of specific conditions is investigated at a basic foundation level. You need to be aware of patient lived experiences derived from narratives, research and evaluation of practice. This will improve your knowledge base and also underpin any self-development activities linked to practice placement. This combination of theoretical evidence and practice-based work will ensure that the needs of patients are handled in a proactive and positive manner in all your scholarly and practical activities. Inter-Professional Learning (IPL) The partnership between the academic and practice arena is an essential ingredient in the development, delivery and evaluation of the physiotherapy programmes. During other level 5 modules you will have opportunities to work alongside and learn together in mixed groups of healthcare students and this will be replicated in all practice placement experiences where different professions frequently work together within clinical teams. The aim of Inter-professional learning is to build upon and apply strategies previously developed and to contribute to effective team working and problem solving activities arising in a modern health and social care setting. Learning Activities 1 Arrange opportunities to work with other health and social care professionals 2 Seek out opportunities to learn from other health and social care students whilst on placement 3 Observe and engage with a multi-disciplinary team working in practice focused on patient care 4 Arrange opportunities to work with non-clinical members of the organisation e.g. Patient Safety, Education and Training, Finance, Procurement, Estates, Governance, Coding and how their role contributes to the delivery of quality patient care 5 Talk to a service user and/or use the case notes to map the support networks involved in their patient journey (to include, family, neighbours, lay support, health and social care practitioners and services) and to provide two way feedback on the impact on each persons life and health care journey 6 Attendance at an inter-disciplinary talk, conference or other learning event. This could be held by the University, clinical practice e.g. ward rounds, a student society or a professional event. Students are required to provide evidence they have attended the event and document what they have learnt from this with regards to their role and how they interact with others to the benefit of the service user.

Aims and Objectives

Module Aims

To provide practice based experience in the treatment/management of service users. You will build upon prior practice placement experience; integrate theoretical knowledge and skills learnt in academic modules into the practice environment and utilise transferable cognitive, affective and practical skills. On successful completion of this module you will: 1. Develop interpersonal skills with service users and colleagues and integrate with other members of the multidisciplinary team 2. Apply aspects of theoretical study to clinical/therapeutic practice 3. Develop skills in the assessment and treatment of service users and be able to evaluate effectiveness of this intervention 4. Develop self-management skills in terms of time, independent preparation and review in the context of the clinical setting 5. Reflect on aspects of practice in the light of experience and advice 6. Show awareness and insight into how healthcare professions to optimise effective multi-disciplinary team working (Multi -professional Education (MPE) You must achieve the learning outcomes within the time available (2 x 6 weeks placements) at level 5. The learning outcomes support you in achieving the aims of the module. Multi -professional Education (MPE) The aim of multi-professional education is to build upon and apply strategies previously developed and to contribute to effective team working and problem solving activities arising in a modern health and social care setting.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Modify styles to communicate in developing effective working relationships with patients/clients and other professionals taking account of ethical considerations and respecting their rights, dignity, and confidentiality
  • Foster effective working relationships with members of the multidisciplinary team providing appropriate
  • Examine and assess patients, involving them in the analysis of the information, in identifying problems and planning treatment programmes with regard to individual patient need with prompting from clinical educator/s
  • Select and apply appropriate interventions taking into account health and safety issues, and modify them in response to the evaluation of the effects achieved
  • Manage a caseload, prioritising your workload and managing your time effectively
  • Construct management plans and manage resources in the light of departmental expectations, constraints and available supporting services
  • Produce a comprehensive case study arising from practice; that evidences the application of theoretical and practical skills learnt throughout academic year and in previous practice placement/s, and evaluates the effectiveness of the assessment, intervention and management
  • Reflect on and critically evaluate recent professional activity indicating the impact of critical events on personal and professional practice

Syllabus

The integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes specific to the specialty area of the placement reflect the five sections of practice: safe/professional conduct, professionalism, interpersonal, clinical and management skills as defined in the pre-set practice placement assessment criteria. Introduction to the Continuous Professional Development process: including developing learning outcomes/objectives, reflecting on a learning experience and producing a practice case study/piece of work. You will receive guidance and prompting from a placement educator and take an active role in, and where appropriate be responsible for a caseload under their supervision. You will have opportunity to work with and learn from other health professionals and appropriate staff within the placement setting as well as the named placement educator to facilitate understanding of the multidisciplinary and complex nature of health and social care provision.
