This module integrates the four core areas of physiotherapy studied within managing clinical cases (MSc) module: cardiorespiratory, neurology, musculoskeletal and special client groups. It applies the principles learnt from MSk, CVR and Neuro, and builds on the complexity of multi-pathology introduced in SCG. The emphasis on critical appraisal of the literature will support the development of your understanding of the evidence base for clinical practice for patients with multi-pathology. As far as possible, expert clinicians and service-users (patients/carers) will contribute to and contextualise your learning through lectures, discussion seminars, case study workshops, videos and/or by discussing their lived experiences of their condition.
As a separate but related component of this module you will acquire and refine interpersonal skills that promote patient engagement with healthcare; encourage patients to take more responsibility for their own health; and enhance motivation for sustained health behaviour change. This element of the module takes an interpersonal perspective on patient engagement and motivation and explores how a health professional’s behaviour influences outcome. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your attitudes and beliefs about patients and evaluate how your behaviour can assist or undermine engagement and change. The module also provides opportunities to practice some of the skills involved in evidence-based approaches such as motivational interviewing.
This module will enable you to plan and deliver contemporary high quality healthcare in order to meet the challenging and complex needs of individuals across primary (GP practices), secondary (Hospital) and community-based care.
