Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Carry out quantitative data analysis using SPSS.
• Interpret the results from SPSS quantitative analyses.
• Justify the appropriate choice and application of statistical methods in order to answer specific research questions.
• Report the results of quantitative data analysis at a professional level and style appropriate for psychology.

The module syllabus will cover a range of basic and some advanced quantitative analyses that are commonly used in psychology. Indicative topics include issues and tests relating to scale construction (e.g. questionnaire development, reliability, and exploratory factor analysis); tests of differences (such as t-tests; one-way, factorial, repeated measures, and mixed model ANOVAs, ANCOVA); and tests of association (such as correlations, linear regression, logistic regression), as well as moderation and mediation using the PROCESS plug in to SPSS.

Teaching and learning methods

This is a 20 CATS (10 ECTS) module, which translates into a total study time of 200 hours. These hours are split into 33 teaching hours, with the rest available for independent study. The 33 hours are spread out across 11 sessions (3 hours per session). Sessions will be in-person with some supplementary online materials to support independent study and will comprise lectures, step-by-step SPSS demonstrations, and formative quizzes and activities during which you will be able to gain hands-on experience using the techniques described in the lectures and practice what has been learnt. Staff provide verbal formative feedback during these activities to help you gauge and develop your knowledge and understanding. Outside of the main teaching sessions, staff provide weekly module-specific office hours for further discussion and support if needed.
