Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Provide an analytical account of social inequality (class, gender, sexuality, age, race and ethnicity, disability and global), the role of power in shaping it and the consequences for crime, victimisation and criminal justice
• Communicate ideas and arguments in a variety of written formats
• Identify, select and draw upon a range of sources to support the development of an argument
• Understand and critically evaluate competing definitions of crime, and criteria for measuring crime
• Critically assess the role of media in understanding our perceptions of crime
• Outline the development of the field of criminology beyond the established global north histories
• Describe and examine key concepts and theoretical approaches in criminology, evaluate their application and use them to analyse crime, victimisation and responses to crime and deviance

Assessment strategy

The assessments for this module are designed with the principles of Assessment for Learning as their foundation (https://cambridge-community.org.uk/professional-development/gswafl/index.html#group-What-is-AFL-mt9I3732Wq).

Multiple Choice Test 30%: Marked automatically. This test will be designed to cover the whole of the module’s curriculum and will provide learners with an understanding of what areas they understand and what areas they need to work on. As such the assessment covers all of the LO’s. Although the results will differ between each student, the marks will not count towards the Summative Assessment. This is a pass/fail test and carries 30% of the module’s marks.

Take Home Exam 70%: This exam covers the curriculum and is based broadly on the key readings, therefore acting as both a comprehension test and tool to keep students engaged across the whole module. As such the assessment covers all of the LO’s.
