Dr Sabu Padmadas is leading a project that is investigating healthcare inequalities in Brazil and India, focusing on women and children from the poorest communities.

This project is coordinated by a trilateral research network, which engages demographers, social statisticians, health economists and social policy specialists from Brazil, India and the UK. Through systematic comparison of population data, it addresses the methodological challenges and policy strategies needed to close the gap in healthcare access between the richest and the poorest.

Dr Padmadas has also been successful in securing two additional grants from the ESRC Pathfinder Programme to examine the wellbeing and living conditions of migrants, associated inequalities in urban China, and the impact on left-behind families in China and South Africa. These projects have strengthened research capacity and the establishing of a vibrant international research network to address complex population and health issues, especially in transition (BRICS) economies.
