Dr David Milne is a Research Fellow within the School of Engineering at the University of Southampton and a Visiting Researcher at El Laboratorio de Geotecnia at CEDEX in Madrid.

David’s has a background in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He completed an Engineering Doctorate in Transport and the Environment at the University of Southampton supported by Network Rail High Speed, the infrastructure manager for the High Speed One railway line. Developing lineside monitoring techniques and associated data analysis techniques to improve maintenance. David works on a variety of projects including the Track to the Future programme grant and other Rail Infrastructure research projects funded by Network Rail as well as the European Union. He is also involved with the UKCRIC-PLEXUS project.

Research interests

David’s research interests relate to understanding and improving the physical performance of Railway Track and other Infrastructure. Studying variation of properties along the track and their influence on performance is central to his work.

He is interested in developing and applying different lineside monitoring techniques. In particular increasing the duration of and scale of monitoring deployments using low cost sensors and the application of new distributed optical fibre measurement systems (such as DAS) for monitoring of railways.

This is in parallel with an interest in low frequency track vibration and variation along railway tracks and how to make use of analytical and simple numerical models to automate interpretation of signals from line side monitoring and gain a better understand the behaviour of the track.
