Katherine Kwa is a Research Fellow in Offshore Renewable Energy at the University of Southampton and part of the Infrastructure Geotechnics group within Engineering and Physical Sciences.

I completed my PhD at The University of Sydney in 2019 in Geotechnical Engineering, supported by The Australian Postgraduate Award

My research background is in applying soil mechanics to prevent liquefaction of bulk cargoes, such as metallic ores, during shipping transportation

I am a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton and am also part of the Supergen ORE Hub, a diverse, multidisciplinary group in the UK, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The Supergen ORE Hub aims to connect academia, industry, policy and public stakeholders and inspire innovation to maximise societal value in offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.

I am currently working on improving the foundation design of offshore floating renewable energy structures, such as wind turbines, wave and tidal energy devices. I am using my background in geotechnical engineering to model and gain a better understanding of soil behaviour and its interaction with these foundations.

Research interests

Applications of soil mechanics and geotechnics including:

  • Prevention of bulk cargo liquefaction during maritime transportation
  • Improving foundation design for anchoring and mooring systems used for offshore floating facilities
