Professor Kenneth Pye is Visiting Professor within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

Professor Kenneth Pye is an internationally recognised environmental geoscientist who specialises in geomorphology and sedimentology with interfaces to other branches of the earth and environmental sciences, engineering, ecology, planning and environmental management. His academic and professional qualifications include MA from Oxford University, PhD and ScD from Cambridge University, and he is a Chartered Geologist and a Fellow of the Geological Society. He held academic appointments as Royal Society Research Fellow, Lecturer, Reader, Personal Professor and Established Professor at the Universities of Cambridge, Reading and Royal Holloway University of London before becoming a Visiting Professor at Southampton in 2011. Since 2003 he has also been the Director of Kenneth Pye Associates Ltd, an independent firm which carries out applied environmental research, consultancy and investigations. Much of his recent work has been related to environmental risk assessments associated with new nuclear power station development and renewable energy infrastructure, geo-engineering for habitat recreation, the impacts of climate and sea level change on coastal and estuarine environments, and coastal erosion and flood risk management.

Research interests

Principal research interests relate to coasts, estuaries and shallow marine environments, including shoreline management, nature conservation and nationally important infrastructure development. Other interests relate to environmental management in arid and semi-arid environments, the effects of climate change and the development of techniques for the physical and chemical characterization of sediments and soils.

Former supervisor / co-supervisor for more than 25 PhD students.

Advice and consultancy services provided to a wide range of governmental and non-governmental organizations, firms of environmental consultants and developers in the UK and overseas. A former Committee member of the British Society for Geomorphology, British Sedimentological Research Group and the Clay Minerals Group of the Mineralogical Society. Currently a member of the Advisory Board foe the NERC-EA supported iCoaSST project.
