Research project: Examining long-term degradation of LiFePO4 batteries for Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Energy Storage

The researches at Southampton university will receive a limited (~2-8hrs) but regular (monthly) allocation of beam time at ISIS over a 24 month period to investigate the time resolved degradation of battery systems. ISIS is a World-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford in the United Kingdom. Researchers at Southampton university with collaboration of researchers at ISIS will study commercially available LiFePO4 and LiMn2O4 materials.


It is proposed that four samples of each battery chemistry are cycled at Southampton at varying C rates and under V2G and non-V2G battery cycles. Each cell will be of appropriate size to be attached to a standard candle stick and present sufficient material to the neutron beam to elucidate crystallographic structure, stress and strain, and material diffusion. At appropriate and convenient moments in the ISIS cycle and in the battery cycling test, the battery systems will be examined by neutron diffraction on the Polaris or GEM diffractometers, with an average data collection time of approximately 1-2hrs.
