Dr Huw D Jones Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Southampton, Faculty of Arts and Humanities

I’m a Lecturer in Film Studies with an interdisciplinary background and specific expertise in the market for British and European films.

My teaching and research focuses on contemporary British and European cinema. I'm particularly interested in films which travel across borders: their themes, styles and stories; their funding, production, distribution and exhibition; and their audiences and reception.

My research interests builds on my post-doctoral research with the HERA-funded Mediating Cultural Encounters through European Screens (MeCETES) project, a three-year collaborative project between the University of York, University of Copenhagen and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, which looked at the transnational production, circulation and reception of European film and television drama. I've published work on the appeal of British films from James Bond to Ken Loach in mainland Europe, the market for European and foreign-language films in the UK, and the foreign distribution and reception of Italian quality cinema. I've also looked at various policies designed to encourage the cross-border circulation of European films, such as the EU's Creative Europe MEDIA programme and the Council of Europe's co-production treaty.

My research involves a variety of methods, including the statistical analysis of box office figures and large consumer surveys, focus groups with audiences, and interviews with filmmakers and distributors, as well as traditional film studies approaches such as visual and textual analysis. I have an interdisciplinary background, starting off with an undergraduate degree in geography (Swansea University), before specialising in cultural geography during my MA (Royal Holloway University of London) and PhD (Swansea University), followed by post-doctoral research in the fields of cultural policy (University of Glasgow) and the creative industries (University of South Wales).

I was appointed as a Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Southampton in autumn 2017. Alongside my current teaching and research in film studies, I have a long standing interest in Welsh art history, having written my PhD dissertation on the role of the British state in promoting Welsh art and national identity during the post-Second World War period, and I continue to review books and exhibitions on Welsh art for various publications.
