Jan Davis is a Principal Teaching Fellow within Health Sciences, University of Southampton. She has extensive experience of advanced clinical practice within primary care and urgent care settings.  Jan was influential in leading innovative nurse led services and the education and development of nurses working in these areas, gaining expertise in new service design, the creation of new teams, policies and procedures, staff training and support mechanisms.

Jan is a registered nurse, children’s nurse, midwife and independent prescriber. Following pre- registration training at the Hospitals for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London and Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, her professional career has been primarily within a range of urgent and primary care settings.

She has worked at the University of Southampton since 2005 when she was appointed as a lecturer. She has since held a number of senior roles within the school, including executive board membership. Jan is currently studying for a Post Graduate Diploma in Executive Coaching and works as an internal coach.

Jan is a registered teacher with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.


Research interests

Following development of a new grading tool for assessment in practice of pre-registration degree nurses, Jan is currently part of a team evaluating the implementation of the all graduate pre-registration nursing programme and the introduction of grading in practice. Jan is also interested in how to assess mastery in advanced practice using viva voce assessment processes.

Jan is deputy programme lead for the MSc Leadership and Health and Social Care.

Jan contributes to teaching and marking of primarily leadership-focused modules and is module lead for post-graduate Strategic Management module and undergraduate Leadership in Health and Social Care module. She is a supervisor to MSc students, personal academic tutor to undergraduate students and practice visitor supporting nursing students in practice.
