Professor Sue Colley is an associate dean within Health Sciences at the University of Southampton

As an Associate Dean since 2010, I have both Faculty and University responsibilities. Within the Faculty I am the executive lead for ensuring that there is alignment between the Faculty and University strategies, integrating innovation and internationalisation as important areas of growth. Across the University I facilitate important inter-disciplinary connections to progress innovation in health care and support growing synergies between Faculty global activities and the refreshed University international strategy.

Sue has spent her career involved in health care and health care education. Before joining The University of Southampton in 2003, she was at King's College, London (1993-2000).  Sue’s first post at The University of Southampton was to lead on the multi-million pound regional education contract that was awarded to the University by the Strategic Health Authority.

Having been heavily involved in the formation of Health Sciences at Southampton, her focus has been on ensuring the school adapts its portfolio of research led education and professional development for non-medical professionals to meet the needs of the health care sector, in particular a number of major NHS clients.

I am a founding member of the Praxis Forum Advisory Circle – Green Templeton College, Oxford

Green Templeton College, University of Oxford (2011)   Awarded a fellowship as Praxis Visiting Research Associate and Practitioner in Residence under the Templeton Education and Charity Trust (TECT)/Oxford Praxis Forum initiatives.

The Ministry of Health, South Sudan and a Technical Working Group comprising WHO, UNFPA, USAID, UNICEF, MSH and World Bank (2011)  A project to support the development of a Comprehensive Standardized National Midwifery In Service Training Programme including Education Manuals and Tools. (£20,000)

The Said Business School/Green Templeton College, University of Oxford  (2009): In November 2009 I was awarded a Scholarship by the University of Oxford to undertake the international ‘Stimulus Leadership Programme’.  This programme is located at the Said Business School, University of Oxford and involves a prestigious small group of six-eight global leaders joining with Faculty to explore and re-visit challenging leadership issues.

HEFCE Award for Employer Engagement (2008):  In collaboration with the School of Engineering, the School of Management and Winchester School of Art, I led the School of Nursing contribution to this successful bid.  The specific contribution of the School focused upon building nursing leadership capacity within a range of local health care organisations. (Total funding £1,994,700)

EU/US Atlantis Programme: Actions for Transatlantic Links and Academic Networks in Training and Integrated Studies (2007):   As Project Director, I was awarded funding to support a collaborative project between the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Southampton and The School of Nursing, University of Washington. The focus of the project was: Developing the Nursing Capacity for Global Health Care. (£50,000)

The Florence Nightingale Foundation (2006) : I was awarded a Senior Leadership Scholarship in order to design a bespoke personal development programme that would equip me with advanced leadership competence to develop nursing and healthcare in the 21st Century. (£15,000)

The Centre for Implementation Science/ Wessex Academic Health Science Network

  • Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust (2009-10):  Following a series of informal meetings, I led a Faculty team  who visited the Trust to discuss workforce development provision relating to: Chronic Disease Career Pathways and the Management of Long Term Conditions; Inter-professional Mentorship Programmes and Inter-professional Leadership programmes for Band 6/7 clinical staff. Regarding the latter, I personally led the design and delivery of the inter-professional Leadership Programme. This developed into an innovative programme that combined policy analysis, drama and improvisation to focus on leadership development related to Patient Safety and Service Improvement. Other health care providers expressed an interest in this work and I was invited to present the initiative as part of the Oxford Strategic Leadership Programme hosted by The Said Business School, University of Oxford. 
  • National Health Service Blood and Transplant Special Health Authority. (2008-2009): I facilitated an introductory workshop, the result of which was the securing of a six month initial contract in order to undertake a scoping project to identify organisational need related to learning and career development
  • Southampton City PCT (2006-2007): Following close consultation with Trust managers, I designed a pilot programme that focused on developing three levels of leadership capacity across the organisation. This was well evaluated and the PCT agreed a further three year contract to continue this work. 
  • South West Strategic Health Authority (2006):  I led the then School of Health Sciences response to the tender process that resulted in the successful award of a multi-professional CPD contract that covered the geographical area of South Wiltshire. The provision offered within this contract addressed employer need for more flexible education packages that allowed for a ‘stepping off/stepping on’ approach to credit accumulation and involved a degree of organisational diagnostic problem framing within the programme design. The programme was delivered in a range of employer settings.
