Sara Benedi Lahuerta is a Lecturer in Employment Law at the University of Southampton Law School. Her research interests lie at the intersection of equality law, employment law and EU law.

Sara joined the Law School in September 2014. She graduated in Law and Business at the University of Zaragoza (2007); she holds an LLM in EU Law from the College of Europe (2008) and a PhD from the University of Leicester (2015).

During her doctoral studies, she was a trainee at the European Commission (DG Justice), an academic assistant at the College of Europe and an associate tutor at the University of Leicester. She has also collaborated with local and European NGOs dealing with equality, migrants and women rights, and she has trained Spanish civil servants on EU and Spanish anti-discrimination law. She was also a research assistant on a project on public policies against religious phobias (Universities of Alcala and Zaragoza).

Sara is a qualified Spanish lawyer and she previously worked as an in-house lawyer in the private sector.






Research interests

Current Research

Building on her PhD on the effectiveness of racial equality law in Britain and Spain, Sara’s current research focuses on the analysis of enforcement procedures in employment and equality law, with a focus on collective redress, the use of ADR, the role of intermediaries, such as NGOs, trade unions, and the effects of austerity policies on access to justice. She is also interested in the conflict between freedom of expression and freedom on religion.

General research interests:

  • Social and employment law, at EU and comparative level
  • Equality law
  • Access to justice and ADR, particularly in employment law
  • Human rights, particularly in connection with interculturality, migration, freedom of religion and freedom of expression
  • Free movement of persons in the EU
  • The effects of technology and the Internet in the employment relationship

Co-organiser: Rethinking EU Equality Law: Towards a More Coherent and Sustainable Regime

Project member: Freedom of Expression and prevention of violence and discrimination on grounds of religion (directed by Prof. Zoila Combalia, Universidad de Zaragoza and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Justice)
