Dr Mildred Iro, a National Institute for Health Research Clinical Lecturer in Genomic Medicine. She is also undertaking clinical training in paediatric immunology and infectious diseases.
She obtained a DPhil degree from the University of Oxford, UK in 2018. Mildred’s research during her DPhil was on childhood encephalitis. Working as a lead research fellow, Mildred co-ordinated the initiation and delivery of a large NIHR funded Phase 3 multi-centre randomised controlled efficacy trial of intravenous immunoglobulin in childhood encephalitis (IgNiTE). She also conducted encephalitis based epidemiological studies, and a Cochrane systematic review on encephalitis.
Prior to her DPhil programme, Dr Iro worked as a clinical research fellow with the Oxford Vaccine Group, UK and during this time was the lead clinical research fellow for various investigator led and commercial paediatric vaccine trials.
Following completion of her DPhil programme, Mildred was appointed as a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom.
Dr Iro is currently undertaking research training in genomic medicine as part of her clinical lectureship. Her interest is in using genomics and transcriptomics to improve clinical phenotyping for a precision medicine approach for patients with severe infections and immunodeficiency.
She has published several articles and presented at numerous international and national level meetings. She is the recipient of the Lorber prize for the best paediatric publication for her work on childhood encephalitis admissions, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases Journal in April 2017.
