About
Tom Arney is a PhD candidate at the National Oceanography Centre, University of Southampton, and the British Antarctic Survey. He studies the climate and environment of Antarctica in the geological past, as a way of understanding current changes there.
In early 2022, he participated in an expedition to East Antarctica on the German research icebreaker Polarstern as a marine geologist. He worked with 50 other international scientists to discover more about how cold ocean currents are formed and how this has changed in the geological record.
His main research focus is in West Antarctica, where he is investigating ocean and ice conditions in the Amundsen Sea about 1-3 million years ago. This should shed light on what the ice sheet covering West Antarctica was doing in response to the variable climate at the time, with implications for global sea-level rise.
