Ling Yang is a first year PhD student in the School of Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton. He has an international academic background, with education and research experience in Australia, Singapore, China, and the United Kingdom. His current research is to understand terrestrial ecosystem responses to heatwaves, droughts, and their compound occurrence using Earth Observation (EO) and in-situ measurements, and investigate the sensitivity of Terrestrial Biosphere Models (TBMs) to these hydroclimate extremes. He will further improve the representation of land-atmosphere interactions in global Earth System Models through process-level improvements and advanced data assimilation approaches, including 4D-Ensemble-Var, Bayesian and Hybrid methods. His work will possibly integrates TBMs such as JULES, LPJ-GUESS, and CLM, with a strong interest in inter-model comparison projects to evaluate model performance and uncertainty under climate extremes. Before joining Southampton, Ling completed a Master by Research at the University of Edinburgh, applying the CARDAMOM data assimilation framework to constrain carbon-water interactions across contrasting ecosystems.
