Rowena Bedford is a Senior Research Assistant within Health Psychology at the University of Southampton.

My current role is as a senior research assistant “Evaluating the Home-based Intervention Strategy (HIS-UK) to reduce new Chlamydia infection among young men aged 16-25 years by promoting correct and consistent condom use”. This project is funded by the NHS National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Public Health Research (PHR) Programme. Project lead: Professor Cynthia Graham.

I am a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Research interests

My research interests include:

  • Digital health behaviour change interventions for the promotion of health and prevention or management of illness.
  • Biopsychosocial factors that increase the likelihood of contraception uptake and discontinuation
  • Health policy and promotion
  • Young people’s attitudes and experiences toward contraception and sexuality
  • The impact of hormonal contraceptives on behaviour

Past research activities, supervised by Professor Cynthia Graham, have included:

  • “Women’s perspectives and experiences with male condoms” – a Qualitative Project (2017)
  • “Mood related changes as a predictor of hormonal contraception discontinuation” – Literature Review (2016)
  • “Factors predicting the use of extended regimen oral contraceptives” – a Quantitative Project (2016)

Evaluation of HIS-UK

Randomised controlled superiority trial with three-parallel groups (two intervention and one control arm, 1:1:1 allocation), with an internal pilot, to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a behavioural intervention to reduce Chlamydia infection among men aged 16-25 years.
