My course offered the perfect combination of demography and geography which focused specifically on the human aspects of global challenges.

Why did you choose to come and study at Southampton?

I chose to study at the University of Southampton because of the unique opportunity to study population and geography.  It offered the perfect combination of demography and geography which focused specifically on the human aspects of global challenges.

What were your Southampton ‘highlights’?

The highlight of my time at Southampton was participating in an international exchange to the University of Western Ontario in the third year of my undergraduate degree.  Studying abroad at an international institution such as the University of Western Ontario, enriched my undergraduate experience, adding an international dimension.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

I enjoyed the fact that my undergraduate degree offered the flexibility to tailor my degree to my personal interests.  For example, I was able to study a music module in my second year and a global health module in my third year.

What have been the highlights of your career to date?

I recently went to Bangkok to intern for three months at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, in the statistics division.  My undergraduate degree made me curious about the work of the United Nations and  prepared me for many aspects of the work that I was involved in whilst there.  I was involved in a project which aimed to improve birth and death registration in the Asia-Pacific region and I was able to use the demographic skills that I learnt during my undergraduate degree.  This degree provides you with a unique toolkit of practical, statistical and demographic skills, as well as a more substantive perspective, which focuses on putting these skills into action in developing and developed contexts.

How did your time at Southampton help you to grow as a person and help you get to where you are now?

The Population & Geography degree offers many interdisciplinary aspects: demography, geography, statistics and global health.  I really value the practical skills that I acquired through my degree, and a desire to learn more and delve into different fields of study.
