RYA sailing courses

It is not possible to talk with people about Southampton and not have someone ask if you have managed to go sailing.  Our sailing courses cater for all abilities from complete beginners to seasoned Seafarers, offering you a variety of boats, skills to learn and challenges to master.   The 'Sailing Pathway' will show you the options available to you as you start to learn to sail.

This 2 day course is ideal for those that are sailing for the very first time.  On the course you will learn how to control the boat and sail under the supervision of RYA qualified instructors. During this course, candidates will:

  • learn to Tack and Gybe
  • learn to Sail in all directions
  • gain an understanding of how to rig a boat
  • gain experience of launching and recovering a boat
  • discuss a variety of basic sailing theory

Upon completion of the course attendees should be able to sail in light winds under supervision

Basic Skills

This course will be building upon what you have learnt in Level 1  and also building further content in:

  • rigging
  • launching
  • sailing in all directions
  • capsize recovery
  • essential safety knowledge

Upon completion of the course, you should be able to sail without supervision and make decisions in favourable weather conditions

Time to step up your game as you consolidate all you have learnt from Levels 1 and 2 and experience a range of taster sessions from the higher level courses, giving you a more secure footing for further sailing development. These higher level courses are Seamanship Skills, Day Sailing, Sailing with Spinnakers and Performance Sailing; see Advanced Sailing for more details of each of these courses.

Upon completion of this course you should be more confident in sailing skills and techniques, and ready to progress onto the Advanced Modules

Level 4 Sailing Courses

Seamanship Skills

This course is geared towards improving your independent sailing ability. With your instructor you will develop your skills in handling a boat in a variety of circumstances and solving problems afloat, including sailing without a rudder and how to recover a person from the water. During this course, candidates will:

  • learn to sail without a rudder
  • learn to sail without a centre board
  • learn to right an inverted dinghy
  • launch and recover the boats in different circumstances
  • stopping
  • reducing sail
  • recovering a man overboard and anchoring

 Upon completion of this course you should be able to handle a wide range of situations afloat

Day Sailing

Go cruising! In this course you will learn to use a chart to navigate to another location, such as Calshot or the Isle of Wight, as well as sailing your boat without the aid of your instructor. This two-day session will further develop your skills as an independent sailor. During this course, candidates will be:

  • preparing and planning for a day cruise
  • pilotage and decision making including adverse conditions
  • learning to use and understand a compass and other navigational equipment

Level 4 Sailing Courses

Sailing with Spinnakers

Go fast and look cool! Are you a confident sailor and ready to go faster? Learn how to control three sails at once and travel faster than ever before! This course will prepare you to use the spinnaker and trapeze with confidence, expanding your sailing experience. Course content includes:

  • how to rig the boat
  • launch and recover and gybe one type of spinnaker (either Symmetric or Asymmetric)
  • how to sail the best possible course downwind

Upon completion of this course you can expect to be able to use one type of spinnaker.

Performance Sailing

Improve your boat handling and confidence in performance dinghies. This course aims to extend your understanding of how to sail effectively in a range of different conditions boats, such as the Laser 4000.

Upon completion of this course you can should be able to sail faster and more efficiently in all conditions.

You have gained your level 2 Basic Skills certificate (or higher) and you want to get out there and practice your tacking and gybing and try to remember how to sail around that triangular course. Come and join us for a recreational sailing session either down at Southampton Sailing club to gain some more time 'at the helm'.

Recreational sailing sessions are free for Sport and Wellbeing Members who hold an RYA level 2 Sailing Certificate (or higher). These sessions are supervised by qualified staff but no instruction is provided. Those who appear to not have control of their vessels will be asked to leave the water.

What's Included on the sailing courses?

Course Cancellations/Transfers

We retain the right to cancel a date and transfer your booking or offer you a refund if the weather is unsuitable to run the course on the basis of health and safety. As part of this decision we will be looking at wind, temperature and sea state. Where possible we will give you 24 hours’ notice when a clear and accurate weather forecast comes through.

On the rare occurrence of staff sickness we will endeavour to cover the staff shortage and continue to run the course. This would also be grounds for a refund or date transfer.

The bookee cancelling the booking

Over 7 days before the course: We are happy to offer a full refund or transfer your booking to another date upon request.

Over 48 hours before the course: We will give a 50% refund or a full refund upon the presentation of a current doctor’s note.

Less than 48 hours before the course: We are not able to offer a refund

Please note that the time period stated refers to start of the day, not the start of the course.  All refunds are limited to course fees only.  If you book local accommodation, you may choose to take out cancellation/holiday insurance.
