I am a Teaching Fellow in the Academic Centre for International Students, part of the Faculty of Humanities.  Having studied at Southampton, I became a Faculty Member in 2008.  I currently coordinate and teach Independent Learning on English for Academic Study and Masters with Integrated Preparatory Study programmes.

I believe in engagement and experience and endeavour to design creative interactive lectures, seminars, and workshops.  I am excited by technology and innovative media and my classes regularly feature gamification, participation technologies, and team activities.  I have a passion for developing interdisciplinary partnerships and have been fortunate to work on a variety of projects.  I co-developed, with Vanessa Mar-Molinero, Smart Skills, a creative concept encompassing academic, research, life, and professional skills offered across a variety of media (physical and virtual).  Most recently, alongside colleagues from Southampton and Guadalajara, I helped produce an exciting multimedia-training package.  I also work with colleagues across the faculty on a number of projects to explore digital portfolios, learning records, and virtual learning spaces.

Building upon my earlier work and experience at the Doctoral Training College, I was recently appointed to lead Faculty employability activities.  An update on developments within this area will follow shortly.

Research interests

My research interests closely tie to my teaching.  Main areas of focus are Learner Autonomy, Computer Science, Language, Motivation, and Project Planning. Time is of particular interest and I am currently preparing a research project to explore student understanding, perception, and management.  I have interests in social anthropology and ethnography, notably, adaptation and behaviour.  Additional, related research interests concern belief, identity, and social change.

In relation to my other responsibilities, I am presently leading a project to embed employability within Humanities Departments.  Research conducted in collaboration with colleagues across the University will consider employability and its impact in Twenty-First century Higher Education experiences.

I specialise in Learner Autonomy and currently coordinate and teach on a number of English language programmes.  These modules explore core academic skills, socialization, and help scaffold important educational transitions.  In addition to my language classes, I also lead, and co-teach activities designed to examine critical and contextual thinking, employability, and enterprise at all levels across the Faculty.  I have led classes on several English as a Medium of Instruction courses (working with colleagues from China, Columbia, Mexico, Russia, and Siberia).  I was previously a senior coordinator on the summer pre-sessional programmes and am currently involved in pre-sessional curriculum design.

I am presently supervising student dissertations on the following areas:

  • Digital Literacies
  • Education
  • Language Learning
  • Technology

I welcome application for supervision in any topic related to my broader research interests.
