PhD Programme Funding

Southampton Business School offers several funding opportunities to our PhD students. In general, the application procedure for each of the funding opportunities is largely the same. In particular, you will not need to apply separately for a scholarship but you will need to indicate the type of scholarship you would like to be considered for on your standard application. To enhance your chances of securing a scholarship, you are strongly advised to contact a member of staff well ahead of submitting your application in order to secure their interest in your proposed area of research and to support to your application. In particular, prospective supervisors should be willing to provide a statement of support for the applicant. It is, therefore, important for the applicant to have approached a suitable member of staff to discuss their proposal prior to submitting an application. Please read carefully the details (e.g. description, eligibility, and deadline) of each of the funding opportunities below in order that you select the one that best suits your needs.

Vice Chancellor's (VC) Scholarships

The VC Scholarship Scheme runs annually and is funded by the university to support excellent home/EU and international students. The total funding for the successful candidate will be £21,000. For full-time students, this will be paid at the rate of £7,000 per annum for three years. For part-time students, this will be paid at the rate of £3,500 per annum for six years. To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must apply online for the PhD programme at the University of Southampton and indicate that they are applying for a PGR Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship in the ‘Funding’ section of the application form. It is also essential to provide a well-written research proposal addressing an explicit research topic. An excellent academic record is also essential in order to secure this award. The deadline for applications is the end of December each year to start from the following academic year (i.e., from the October in the following year).

Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) – University of Southampton PhD funding

The annual Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship scheme run by the Chinese Government supports up to 8,000 Chinese students who study abroad on PhD degree programmes or joint PhD programmes at institutions worldwide. The CSC scholarship covers a stipend for living costs and return flights. Tuition fees are fully funded by the host institution.

Each year there are a number of CSC scholarships available across the University. To be considered for a scholarship within the Business School, you should identify an appropriate research area and contact SBS directly to enquire about funding opportunities in that area. We recommend that you make your application to us by early January stating that you wish to be considered for a CSC scholarship.

You can find further information about CSC scholarships at Southampton here.

Faculty PGR Scholarships

This scheme is for full-time PhD students only. The scholarships cover tuition fees and subsistence. Both home/EU or international students are eligible. Any student on a scholarship who decides to transfer to part-time registration will be deemed to be withdrawn from the scholarship scheme. The key aim of the Faculty PGR Scholarship scheme is to recruit candidates that are judged to be of high academic quality. This is assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

  1. Qualifications and academic credentials;
  2. Academic performance based on referees’ comments;
  3. Strength of the research proposal;
  4. Suitability for the chosen research project.

Priority will be given to those applications that combine rigour with relevance, aimed at solving real world problems that meet the challenges of organisations, as well as government, the economy and society more generally.

Applicants should apply online for the PhD programme in the University of Southampton, and submit the standard application form, a research proposal, a CV and other supporting documents (transcripts, reference letters, IELTS certificates where necessary, etc). Please indicate that you are applying for a Faculty PGR Scholarship.
