Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Explain fundamental chemical principles of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry covered in the module.
- Use written and verbal communication skills in small group tutorials to clearly explain chemical principle and show how you have solved problems.
- Use the core principles covered in the module to solve unseen problems.
Syllabus
Reaction kinetics - collision theory and rate laws
Quantum mechanical descriptions of atoms and energy levels
Identify functional groups and predict the outcome of reactions based on their properties
Draw simple mechanisms to explain outcomes of reactions
Explain periodic trends in chemical properties (electronegativity, ionisation energy, atomic size, metallic character)
Use crystal field theory to explain properties of transition metal complexes
Introduction to d-block chemistry (oxidation states and trends, coordination geometries)
