Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Critically assess contemporary and emerging challenges for the leadership and governance of educational organisations, including fragmentation, disagreement, misinformation, and the demands of democratic and accountable decision-making.
• Analyse how organisational structures, cultures, and leadership practices shape the circulation of ideas, the quality of dialogue, and patterns of decision-making within educational organisations.
• Critically appraise key organisational and leadership theories in relation to how educational institutions function as epistemic and decision-making environments.
• Evaluate the role of educational leaders as epistemic stewards in supporting evidence-informed judgement, professional learning, and organisational change under conditions of complexity and uncertainty.

•Educational leadership in a fragmented world Exploring contemporary challenges facing educational organisations, including misinformation, polarisation, accountability pressures, and complexity, and examining leadership as a system-level response rather than an individual trait. •Educational organisations as epistemic environments Analysing how schools and educational institutions function as sites where ideas are accessed, evaluated, contested, and translated into action, drawing on organisational theory to understand how structures, cultures, and routines shape collective judgement. •Epistemic stewardship and leadership practice Examining the role of leaders in deliberately shaping organisational conditions that support trustworthy knowledge use, professional learning, and evidence-informed decision-making. •Accessing and engaging with trustworthy knowledge Investigating how leaders and organisations support effective engagement with research, data, and evidence, including challenges related to knowledge quality, interpretation, professional judgement, and research-informed practice. •Dialogue, disagreement, and collective reasoning Exploring how educational organisations manage disagreement across difference, including the role of dialogue, psychological safety, facilitation, and structured professional conversations in strengthening collective sense-making. •Decision-making, governance, and adaptive leadership Analysing different modes of decision-making and governance in education, including deliberative, collaborative, and authoritative approaches, and how leaders can align decision processes with impact, urgency, and uncertainty. •Leadership, learning, and organisational change Evaluating how epistemic leadership supports sustained improvement, professional learning communities and networks, and adaptive responses to change within and across educational organisations. •Schools, systems, and place-based democratic intelligence Considering how schools contribute to wider epistemic infrastructures beyond the organisation, including engagement with communities, networks, and policy environments, and the implications for educational leadership and governance.

This module is taught entirely online. A typical 'lesson' would include: -Lectures - delivered live via the university's web conferencing system (Teams) or as pre-prepared videos - Lecture notes - written by the module tutors - Selected readings - from the prescribed core texts - Written tasks submitted via private blogs or discussion forums - Online activities - such as quizzes and tests - Individual and Group tutorials via Teams
